Levantei-me então, afundei bem as chaves e a carteira nos bolsos e fui.

Aveiro is a beautiful city, comfortable (although it is cold) and with a certain fame that I always manage to notice when during the day I try to walk through waves of foreign people, always with their curious looks, talking about the buildings dressed in their tiles and about burning sun, even when it is plain Winter. During the day the whole city has a new, refreshing look, and in a certain way, clean, but when it comes to the night...

At the end of the afternoon, today, i was sitting by the computer when i heard the house door open. The lady that took care of the house had just came in: she was the one who received our payments, cleaned the house and showed people around when they were interested in living there. She had came to receive the rent and as I didn't have the money ready, I just sat in the living room in all my laziness, waiting for someone to "remind" me that i had to go to the cash machine.

The lady is really nice and she speaks a lot, so, for a few minutes i heard her talking to the other people who were living there until the living room door opened and a cheerful face peeked in. Of course I instantly smiled back at her with a wish of good night and an enormous difficulty in accepting that i was going to have to get up from the most comfy chair in the world and go walk through the lights of the city in the cold night. So i got up, stuck my keys and my wallet in my pockets and walked out.

The night was truly cold and exiting the building into the streets is something that stimulates any curious person's senses. Vision: the street was empty, deserted from people; hearing: I couldn't hear anything besides the wind and the stirred river; tact: "COLD!"; palate: "meat patties from dinner!". Nothing great until the nose yawned deeply and a characteristic scent came in. It is was the chestnuts smell, the Autumn smell, the smell that we all learn to love since we're little children and that had just reminded me of how good it is to come out and feel the cold air in your skin and the smell of a typical Portuguese street, how good it is to remember those days when we came home with an enormous joy showing itself in smiles and laughs when we went to buy some chestnuts, when we brought them home and opened them so that in the day after we could compete with our friends and see who had the most of them and throw them, happy, into the giant fire that burned everyone's eyes around it.

I kept walking on the sidewalks, crossing roads and closing my eyes, once in a while, so i could feel even better the scent of the roasted chestnuts. I kept walking by the house's doors and, just for the taste of it, i tried to feel the smell that came out of each of the open entrances on the forefronts of every building. Some stores smelled like new clothes, some others still had their scents covered by the chestnuts', cooked by a lady just a few minutes ahead. Some coffee shops smelled like food, others smelled like cigarettes smokes by the old men who looked closely to the television expecting another goal to happen in the football game they were watching in between comments: "Pass, pass!" one of them said with a sulky look on his face.

On the way home a man, who I noticed to be soaked in perfume, crossed my way. Never before a smell like that had bothered me that much and it didn't take long until i started thinking to myself: "Annoying man, go away!" as he kept going in front of me until suddenly he turned right and walked into a stationer's with it's own newspapers and magazines smell.

The night kept going and my head was flooded with thoughts and new words to strum on the keyboard. When I arrived at home, I delivered the money to the lady and after she left I drowned myself in the ideas started with a simple breath and followed in the bowels of a beautiful night, through Aveiro's scents: a country's scents.
